Overview

EN590 is the European standard for automotive diesel fuel, and its 10ppm sulphur ceiling is what allows modern diesel engines to run particulate filters and catalytic converters without the fouling that higher-sulphur fuel causes. That ultra-low sulphur threshold has become the reference specification for diesel trade well beyond the EU, so EN590 storage is used by blenders and distributors supplying markets that track the European standard even when they are not selling into Europe.

Because road transport, marine auxiliary engines, and stationary generators all draw on the same EN590 pool but on very different schedules, tank capacity for this grade needs to support frequent, relatively small lifts as well as larger term liftings. A Tank Storage Agreement covering EN590 typically specifies cetane number, density, and water content tolerances alongside volume, since off-spec cetane or water content is the most common cause of rejected cargo at discharge.
